Watch: Maria Sofia Love Posts Her Outrageous Take on the Philippine National Anthem

Maria Sofia Love was a breakout internet star in 2015. Her videos which showcased her “modeling para sa ekonomiya” and her funny taglines (“Ituloy ang modeling! Pak!”) were total fan favorites. People couldn’t get enough of her self-styled videos where she walked all over London, partied in clubs and scoping cute guys while eating out. However, one particular video had all of the internet buzzing, and this time for a negative reason.

Facebook page Ang Galing Mo Pinoy uploaded a video of the “model” playing “Lupang Hinirang,” the Philippine National Anthem. Though frowned upon to use such a revered song for unofficial purposes, there really wasn’t anything wrong with it until Maria Sofia Love decided to put her twist on it.

She was seen in a skimpy, red one piece, seemingly making fun of the National Anthem as she held her hand to her crotch instead of above her heart, as is the custom. As the video continued, she gyrated and performed arguably lewd moves to the music, giving no respect at all for the National Anthem. Understandably, many netizens were upset.

Some netizens even brought up House Bill 5224 (HB 5224), which is an update on how the National Anthem should be performed and played. Obviously, Maria Sofia Love violated a lot of the bill’s provisions. Most pertinently, the part of the bill which states that “the national anthem must be sung with fervor following the prescribed lyrics and with a salute – with all persons standing at attention with their right palms over the left chests.”

The song may not also be played for “events of mere recreation, amusement or entertainment purposes” except for a few official exceptions. Should a person be found guilty of these laws, he or she will have to pay “a fine of not less than P50,000 but not exceeding P100,000.”

Netizens are now calling for everything from a public apology to incarceration. As of this writing, Maria Sofia Love has no statement on the matter.
